Francis for his service to Mount. The novices sang a moving song wishing him all success in his future mission.

My Mission Experiment.......
One of the great qualities of my villagers is 'sharing'. They share food, joys, sorrows and anything. We all shared food in the field. Through this I learnt the real meaning of Eucharist.
I enjoyed greatly the love of my village people and utmost love and care of the Jesuits. I am back to novitiate with the experiences which have really strengthened my vocation.

Beware of the Advent Virus !!!
Be on the alert for symptoms of inner HOPE, PEACE, JOY AND LOVE. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in sweeping proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.
Some signs and symptoms of THE ADVENT VIRUS:
- A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.
- An unmistakable ability to enjoy the moment.
- A loss of interest in judging other people.
- A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.
- A loss of interest in conflict.
- A loss of the ability to worry.
- Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation and thankfulness.
- Contented feelings of connectedness with others and God.
- Frequent attacks of smiling.
- An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.
- An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Selected for National Level Kho Kho...
The beauty of a game is not in training nor in winning but in trying… trying with a will to win and a heart to accept when we don’t: trying with a passion to excel with a spirit to appreciate when others do, trying with a sense of commitment and with sportiveness to bow to the judgment. This is the beauty that the sports person Balaji has imbibed at
We are proud of this child prodigy for his wonderful achievements for the first time in the history of our school in the field of sports. He stands for his irrevocable virtues of self discipline, simplicity, and hardwork at studies too.
I extend my hearty congratulations on behalf of Management, The correspondent, Teachers, Mr.Harish & Mr.Chandru ( old students of ours ) and the students well

Jubilee Bells Ringing
The curtains came down on the Silver Jubilee Year of Loyola High School on 11 November, as the day witnessed a grand celebration to mark the event. Archbishop emeritus Ignatius Pinto was the chief guest who gave a thundering speech to enthuse the students and the staff. Mr. Sangliyana was the guest of honour, who spoke fluently in Kannada and won the hearts of the audience. Fr. Vijay, the Provincial, highlighted in his speech, the commitment of the Jesuits to the poor students of the locality. All the past Managers and the HMs of the school were remembered with gratitude and those present were honoured. The cultural programme that followed was much appreciated by all. Br. Marcel slogged hard for this. No doubt, the painstaking efforts of Fr. John and Sr. Tresa made a deep impression on everybody.Hushh... Silence Please......

Face to face with the leopard!

It was past midnight. Fr. John Mendonca was returning from Mangalore. After getting down from the auto, he took quiet steps to MSJ from the main gate. Barely a few steps had he taken, he was stunned with horror to see a strange animal making its way towards him. It took no time for Fr. John to guess that it was the same leopard that the forest officials had made desperate futile effort to trap sometime ago. Only heavenly intervention could help John as there was no one around to look for help. Only thing he could do was to stand still and stare with courage at the leopard. Even the leopard stood still for moment and stared at Fr. John. Thank God, it was not saying the grace before the meals... soon it left him and went its way. Fr. John narrated the traumatic episode to the community members on the following day though many found difficult to believe whether it was real leopard. In fact, sometime ago, Fr. John had made lots of inquiries about leopards. He even downloaded few pictures of leopards from the internet and displayed on the community notice board. However, this time leopard himself gave him unforgettable darshan!Friday, November 9, 2007

Ayudha Pooja at Loyola ITI
On the occasion of Ayudha Pooja, all the vehicles and the machines were solemnly blessed at Loyola ITI. It was a meaningful and a symbolic prayerful ritual, in which all the staff and students thanked the Almighty for blessing the institute through these man-made machinery. All mouths were sweetened at the end of the service.

Birth of 'Prerana'
The ceremony of blessing started at 4.30 pm. Fr. Vijay, the Provincial of Karnataka welcomed the people. Fr. Lisbert, the Regional Assistant for South Asia, inaugurated the building. Later Fr. Lisbert led a short prayer service to bless the house. He also honoured the people who tirelessly worked to put up this centre. The presence of GC delegates and JCSA members was indeed a source of joy and blessing to MSJ community.

Psycho-Spiritual Integration
This is how our II year novices exclaimed after attending 4 days course on Psycho-spiritual intergration along with the novices of 4 other novitiates at Trinity Ashram.
Each one is now trying to explore and excavate one's inner self, attitudes and behaviour with the help of the tips provided by Dr. Sr. Mario Jean A.C. She made her classes more realistic by giving many true incidents. She highlighted the purpose and values of being a religious. It was astonishing to know the existential realities and the psychological dynamism of human beings.
Charged with new enthusiasm, knowing better about themselves, the novices are preparing to use these skills and knowledge in the forthcoming Mission Experiment.

Horizon-2007
Horizon-is a 'Festival of Novices.' It is a time to bring out the talents of the novices and give expression to them through creative presentations. This year Horizon evoked a lot of competitive and team spirit in the novitiate community. Lots of activities such as song-composition, musical piece, card making, speech, declamation, rangoli etc...helped the novices to discover their hidden talents. An half-hour cultural programme by each group on the final day, mesmerized the audience. All the items were judged by the Fathers who encouraged the novices to nurture their amazing potentialities. In all, it was a festive time in the novitiate.Wednesday, September 19, 2007
Fr. Victor Piovesan- 60 Years in the Society
Could you share with us your vocation story in brief?
At the age of 13 I had joined the Diocesan Seminary of the Diocese of Trevesio(
After completing my theological studies at Kurseong, I was assigned from
During these long years I had to face several dangerous diseases: Hemorrhage (1972), heart attack (1991), Heart surgery in
I thank my Heavenly Father for calling me to be a companion of His incarnate Son, Jesus Christ. From the Noviciate to this day, I am enjoying being a companion of Jesus: deepening my personal knowledge of Him, experiencing His abiding presence in me, etc. My Theology has helped me to deepen my spiritual life, which is totally centered on JESUS CHRIST for the service of the Church.
My Novitiate, my life in
Life has taught me that true fulfillment and happiness is found in accepting God’s mysterious will, to say YES to the father, in union with Jesus through the inspiration and power of the Holy Spirit. The heavenly Father loves me as His child; hence I have no worry, but only desire to discern and accept His mysterious plan in my life.
Looking back on my life I can only thank my heavenly ABBA, my companion Jesus and my “Divine Mother”, the Holy Spirit. Of course, Devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary, and to our Saints, etc, has helped me to discern God’s plan in my life and to accept it as the best for me. Hence my feelings are those of FILIAL GRATITUDE to the Triune God who dwells within me, and of total surrender and trust in THEM for the last days of my earthly pilgrimage.
My message is given to me by the late Fr. Ricardo Lombardi, SJ the founder of the Better World Movement, whom I met after my first encounter at the Novitiate in 1948. There he told us: “If you want to be happy and fruitful in the Society, be ready and willing to be the last in the list in the Society.” And then in
Brain Gym
Brain…o.k, gym…alright. But you must be wondering, what’s this 'brain gym' about? You sit for reading and you can’t concentrate; you sit for meditation and your mind is distracted, you try to remember urgent works to be done but at the end of the day, some you forgot. You want to give a good speech but all ideas and thoughts are jumbled up. You are hurt when someone commented that your handwriting is horrible! If these are your symptoms and you want immediate results… all you need to do is ‘Brain Gym’! It’s all about 26 movements of human body to coordinate the working of the brain which is becoming very popular in The MSJ novices along with the other novices of Bannerghatta zone had a day’s intensive workshop on ‘brain gym’ given by Rev.Br. MSJ put on high alert
Panic has spread all around MSJ as two leopards are feared to have sheltered in the MSJ campus. Children are frightened to come to school, as the parents are anxious about the security of the children. The school authorities have closed down the schools ahead of time. The alert button was pressed by the Rector of Trinity Ashram when he found pugmarks of a strange animal in the campus. When he immediately contacted the Bannerghatta Park, they confirmed that the animal was leopard. On the next day, two bike riders spotted the leopard on the road jumping into MSJ campus. Today, the pugmarks were spotted all around the campus. Fr. Willie and Fr. John immediately contacted the Police department and Bannerghatta Park. The combined operation of police, forest and park department is in progress to trap the animal. In the meantime, the campus is flooded with media people. The house Minister, Fr. Arok was all the more panicked when 15 policemen came for lunch and demanded biriyani! Monday, September 10, 2007
Monthi Fest celebrated in the Parish
"Sokkod sangatha melyam..." "Moriyek hogolsiam" ...These traditional Konkani melodies rent the air on the occasion of "Monthi Fest" celebrated for the first time in the history, at Kalenaagrahara parish with grandeur. Fr. Jerome D'Souza was the chief celebrant for the Konkani Mass, in which a large gathering of Mangaloreans of the parish particiapted. It was a family feast, feast of harvest. Throwing of flowers by little children, blessing of new corn, distribution of sugar cane were some of the traditional customs followed. Fr. Mohan, the parish priest took keen interest to organise the Mass in the traditional style. At MSJ, Fr. Rector, the head of the family performed the tradtional practice of blessing the meal and distributing payasam. Seven varieties of vegetarian dishes was the highlight of the family meal. MSJ wishes you a happy Feast of Nativity of Mother Mary
Holy Mary, Child most precious, joy of the Holy Trinity.
Purest daughter soon to bless us; Holy Spirit’s bride to be!
Heavenly child and purest temple, from your cradle send your grace.
Make us pure and sweet and simple, as the love shining from your face.
Holy Mary, Child sublime, garden of virtue, full of grace.
Gate of Heaven make us thine, as we reach out for your embrace!
Heavenly child and fairest dove, beautiful lily, oh so sweet.
Fill us with your trusting love, as we lay flowers at your feet.
Holy Mary, Child of life, mirror of love and hope and peace.
In the sorrow of our strife, teach us the way; our faith increase!
Heavenly child and mystical rosebud, Mother of Mercy, soon to weep.
To thee we bring this song of love to console you as you sleep.

An experience of faith - Pilgrimage to Shivajinagar
The shrine welcomes everyone irrespective of their religion, caste or creed. One can find peace, solace and joy in this place. Since situated in the center of the city, most college going students, office workers, house wives etc make their regular visit to seek our Lady’s intercession.
Many are the miracles and blessings received by the people. Novices made their pilgrimage to this shrine on 5th September on foot and spent whole day in prayer and recollection.
Ms. Teresa one of the pilgrims who stood begging at the entrance who seemed well off, when enquired why she did that, she proudly narrated her story bearing witness to our Lady as tears rolled down her cheeks. She uses the money collected along with her other savings to cook food and feed the hungry. This is a sort of penance which she vowed when she seriously fell ill when she was young. She continued stating, “Mary is my mother, and I live my life single as a promise made to my heavenly mother.” There is not one Teresa, but many who can’t be numbered. Novices were enriched and astonished to witness the faith of multitude people. They returned with great spiritual experience.

Darkness at Noon - 8 Std Boy Passes Away
It was not exactly noon, but the day was bright and the sun still shone as tragedy struck Loyola High School, MSJ, in the evening of Thursday 16 August when Peter (13) studying in 8 std. was run over by a mini-bus driven by a drunkard at the wheel, who literally left the road and ploughed into the muddy track some feet away where the young was walking on his way precisely out of abundant caution to avoid exactly such a mishap. Death literally came chasing him as the drunken driver who drove his vehicle right on the top of the prostrate youngster and smashed open his skull, spilling his brains on the soil. The poor parents of Peter are inconsolable. A pall of gloom has descended over the school. We are grieving.

Fr. Peter Pinto - 50 Years in the Society.
Fr. Peter Pinto, a quiet, self-effacing Jesuit, is in fact a versatile individual, adept at setting right clocks, watches and sundry contraptions as well as human beings of all kinds and proportions. He holds a Masters Degree in Science and has occupied many positions of responsibility in Karnataka and Nagaland. His apparent calm and innocent persona masks a veritable prankster of epic proportions, with irrepressible humour, practical jokes and witty comments on men and matters, without however any malice or intent to hurt. For some years now he is a much loved and appreciated Minister at Could you share with us your vocation story in brief?
I was an altar server in our parish at Bajpe. Attended Mass daily. They took it for granted that I would join the fraternity of priests. Our assistant parish priest, Fr L.V.M. Fernandes told me to join either the diocesan clergy or the Jesuits. When Fr Francis Rebello (then a scholastic) came to Bajpe on vocation promotion, I met him and showed my inclination to join the Jesuit rank. So, eventually I found myself along with 12 other young men at Christ Hall,
What is the best thing about being a Jesuit?
What lessons has life taught you?
“ Do not make the poor man weep because of harsh behaviour !”
“ A good smile drives out all the blues !”

When I learnt to walk....
As the mother eagle feeds its young ones with love and care and makes them look up to the sky, so that one day they may fly, so was my experience of the First Probation in the Society of Jesus. Fr.Socius along with my guardian angel made me experience the love and care of the Society and gave me a glimpse of the life in the same Society.
Our First Probation lasted for fourteen days. During these days, Fr. Socius explained to us, what the Society expects of the candidates who wish to join the Society as mentioned in the General Examen of the Constitutions. Besides that Father took classes on Prayer and explained meticulously all the etiquette needed for a good living. Everyday, we had a talk from the senior member of the community. They shared about their past experiences in the novitiate, mission places where they turned iron into gold. I was very much touched when one of the priests said, “If you had no vocation and God had not called you then you would not have been here! This helped me to deepen my own call.
A good guide is the one who advises us on how to live and behave. I was accompanied by a good guide who taught me everything of the novitiate. Our Probation culminated in the Triduum preached by Fr. Socius. During those days, I experienced immense love of God. On 3rd July, we formally entered the novitiate.

A warm welcome to Fr. Freddie
Don't you remember the parable of those maids waiting with lamps to receive that bridegroom? So were the novices, waiting eagerly to receive Fr. Freddie not with lamps but with bouquets, some half asleep...because this bridegroom too delayed to arrive and arrived only at 10 pm! Ably driven and accompanied by two strong men of Mundgod- Fr. Jeevan and Antony Joseph, Fr. Freddie reached safe and sound and looked fresh though the long drive of 13 hours was exhausting.Fr. Freddie is a new member of our community from this year. Actually, he is the fourth time a member of this house. He was a novice, novice master and the rector of this place and now he will, with his expertise in the Ignatian Spirituality will animate the courses at the newly constructed Ignatian Spirituality Center.
A warm welcome to you dear Fr. Freddie!!!

FIRST VOWS OF THE JESUIT NOVICES
The climax of the ceremony was when the Novice-Director, Fr.DionVaz,S.J., gave his advise to the vowents. He talked on to have personal love for Christ, the Society and the poor. He urged them to be mystics and give love wherever they would go. Fr.Provincial gifted each vowent with a crucifix to make it their life companion in times of joy and sorrow. A short felicitation programme was organised in which the vowents cut the cake to mark this occasion. The second year novices wished them good luck with their song. The vowents also sang a moving song dedicating it to the suffering people in the world. There was a sumptuous dinner prepared by the hard work of the kitchen staff. The presence of many Jesuits and the neighboring religious added grace to the whole ceremony. Everyone bade a heart filled good-night and went back thanking the Lord for this graceful occasion where they really experienced God's hope in these thirteen young Jesuits. Summer Camp
(Lumnesh,a first year novice has shared his experience of living and working with the poor in one of the villages in Pannur.)
Ashram Experiment
The experience I had for five days in the ' Vidyavanam Ashram' was an experience of learning about and feeling the rich meaning of the age long Indian spirituality. A quest for love and wisdom of the divine was the peak point. The Upanishads and the Bhagavad Geetha helped me to understand the richness of meditation, contemplation and the gift of being an Indian dealing with the depths of the soul. The 'guru-sishya' relationship was an inspiring one. It taught me to sit at the feet of the Lord and to listen. These five days taught me the mantras to get into the cave of the heart of the master and myself. I could also experience the integration of the Ignatian spirituality to praise, revere, and serve Christ our master. It was a beautiful experience to see how a child learns and proceeds to enjoy the fullness of life.(Derrick and his first year companions spent five days in an Ashram meditating on the Indian Spirituality.)

AN EXPERIENCE OF LOVE
It was a hot sunny day with no sign of a cloud to ease the summer heat. But within me I felt the coolness of the Love that I was carrying from my retreat to 'Ashaniketan', a home for the intellectually challenged. As I gently put my steps forward to have a unique and revealing experience, I knew for certain that I was making my way into the "abode of Hope." It was a unique experience for me because, I was deeply touched and moved in Bijapur seeing many differently abled people on the streets. They had made their way into my little, broken yet loving heart. It was a dream come true as I really met, worked and lived with these people. (Nithin, is a second year novice, spent a month in Ashanikethan, a home for the mentally challenged people)

Work is worship
The first year Novices had an enriching experience in Pannur in the month of May. It was a 'work experience' for them. Though the sun was burning hot, they did not hesitate to work in the scorching heat, digging foundations for the houses. As the fruit of their love for the poorest of the Hulugunchi village in Raichur, at the end of the camp fourteen poor families could smile looking at those trenches soon to be raised up with the walls. The hospitality of the Jesuits of Pannur was excellent. No doubt the Novices have returned back to the Novitiate with unforgettable rich experiences.

Alone with the Alone in the eight day retreat
The second year novices (14) were led to have a wonderful experience of union with the Lord in silence. Fr.Frederick D'silva guided the novices through an eight day retreat helping them to know the infinite love of God. He being a missionary enthused them in being faithful and committed to the love and mission of Christ given to the Society. As the second years prepare themselves to commit their lives through the vows, the retreat helped them to cherish, nourish and relish the graces so as to flourish in their vocation to serve Christ in His people. As the month's retreat fuels the mission experiment, let us pray that this retreat which they have spent with the Lord may energize them during their experiments ahead.
