HISTORY OF MSJ (1955-68)

1955: Karnataka became a Vice-Province.

1956: Fr. Boniface D’Souza consecrated the Vice-Province to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Fr. Boniface purchased 63 acres of land for Rs.75, 000. (MSJ Property)

16 January 1957: Bishop Thomas Pothcamury laid the foundation for MSJ. Architect of MSJ Br. Giani, Milan foreign missions, Missionaries of Vijayawada on 7 November 1956 cut out the first plan for MSJ. The shape of the main building was in the form of the letter ‘E’.

May 1959: Fr. J.C Pereira was appointed Rector of MSJ.

22 August, 1959: The Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the day on which Mount St. Joseph was inaugurated. An inaugural exhibition was displayed on the Devotion to Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart.

12 March 1960: The Main Altar of the Domestic Chapel was inaugurated by Bishop Thomas Pothacamury.

April 1961: Fr Zanolin died and this was the first burial at MSJ Cemetery.

13 Jan, 1967: Fr Arrupe came to MSJ.

23 Aug 1967: Fr JC Pereira shifted the Provincialte to Loyola Mandir at Lavalle Road.

1968: Fr Apoline D’Souza stepped down as Novice Master after 11 years.

1968: Fr Biscaro was the next Novice Master but MSJ Novitiate was closed down.
